A bike that makes no sense but is great fun to ride is always a winner. BMW's new attitude towards having fun resulted in the HP2, an absolutely ridiculous bike. Similar power to a sports bike but with knobbly tyres - pure genius!

BMW's HP2 again. Riding off road is something that every motorcyclist needs to do at least once. Not having to follow the beaten track is great, even better as there are no speed limits or rules on how to behave! Here's me again taking a short cut…

The cross over between road racing and motocross - Supermoto. Here I am getting to grips with the Husqvarna SM450RR round the tight and twisty Castelletto di Branduzzo track just south of Milan. Imagine racing round a car park with table top jumps and you're thinking along the right lines.

Husky again - the great chassis simply soaked up this kind of malarkey.

Though motocross riding isn't really my forte, I'm always willing to give anything that involves motorbikes a bash. This shot was taken at the Lierop circuit in Holland, a difficult, sandy track. I fell off quite a lot but eventually got the hang of it…

Unwieldy, heavy and unbelievably capable off road. But enough about me, the BMW R1200GS Adventure is an incredible bike as proved by Kevin and Julia Sanders on a regular basis, and perhaps more famously by thespian pals, Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor. I did enough of this to impress six-times Dakar racer Si Pavey to give me a job as an instructor on his off-road skills school.

The sport where it all started for me as a kid. After 12 years I quit competing at trials week in, week out at the age 19 but once you've got the bug… This shot was taken in 2004 when I decided to buy a Beta Rev-3 270 and have a go at a few club trials for a bit of fun. I ended up winning two events! I even got a trophy!

The much awaited BMW G450X Enduro bike was impressive from an engineering standpoint, less so from a rider’s point of view. Rear grip was an issue and the whole package felt nowhere near as forgiving or confidence inspiring as a KTM.

Despite the BMW’s foibles, it was still pretty good fun. In the heat of an Andalusian afternoon, leaping around the mountainsides high above the Mediterranean on someone else’s bike, burning someone else’s petrol isn’t a bad way of earning a living!
